About this Event
Peter Fitzmaurice is a Northern Ireland-qualified Solicitor with more than twenty years of experience in immigration, refugee protection, and human rights law. He is a graduate of the QUB Masters of Law in international human rights. He has held legal and protection roles with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) across multiple complex operational contexts, including Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Yemen, Ethiopia and Ireland.
His work has focused on refugee status determination (RSD), exclusion analysis, legal strategy, emergency response, and capacity-building for government decision-makers. He has managed and led RSD units in large-scale refugee operations, developed procedural guidance, and supported states in aligning asylum systems with international protection standards.
He has recently returned to Northern Ireland to practice as an immigration solicitor at Law Centre NI, bringing field-based protection experience into the domestic legal context.
Peter will share his reflections "From the Field to Local Practice".
With contributions from the Human Rights Centre at Queen's, Professor Colin Harvey and a member of the Syrian community in Northern Ireland.
