On Thursday 29th August to Saturday 31st August 2024 Daylight Robbery presents REFLECTION#3 – “The Drugs Don’t Work”: an uncensored, immersive experience to be staged at the iconic Coventry Cathedral, featuring sound systems, laser displays, documentary film projections, digital animation and photographic exhibition.
During UK City of Culture 2021, Daylight Robbery produced the sell-out House is a Feeling in the vast showrooms of the former IKEA building, receiving over 5000 visitors across 3 weekends. Now Daylight Robbery takes the audience into the labyrinthine downstairs spaces of Coventry Cathedral, with the next chapter in their saga documenting the electronic dance music revolution taking place in Coventry across the late 1980’s and early 90’s.
The Drugs Don’t Work picks up the story in December 1993, with the first ever all-night jungle event outside of London, put on by Jungle Fever at The Edge in Coventry.
Featuring for one night only a special immersive theatrical experience, taking the audience back in time to 1993 at The Edge in Coventry.
The exhibition will premiere two documentary films, including Concrete Jungle: The Birth of Jungle Fever, and an experimental 3D digital short To Your Brain, To Your Vein…, screened in the vestry. Mixing live action with Bedknobs and Broomsticks-style animation, holographic and 3D digital imaging. To Your Brain… is an uncompromising cautionary tale in which MC Man Parris narrates his descent into drug use and his ultimate redemption, in a darkly comedic take on a drug education film. The audience is invited to navigate the labyrinthine corridors of the cathedral, in an immersive experience animated by soundscapes, lasers, smoke and UV backdrops.
Audiences will be able enjoy free DJ workshops (with Amnesia House resident DJ Phil Noizee B), free animation workshops, and a special immersive theatrical performance featuring Rich Raindance and Eastman (tbc), the original founders and promoters of Jungle Fever. Also featuring will be MC Man Parris - ‘The Voice’ ,and special guest Nev Fivey of Amnesia House, and a host of others to be announced. Drug, alcohol and life skills professionals will be on hand throughout the Saturday to speak with visitors.
REFLECTION#3 - The Drugs Dont't Work is dedicated to Karen Bailey (Freaky Features). A massive part of our team who sadly passed away last year. We will be using her designs and inspiration throughout the exhibition.
