There are limitless directions to go in clay. Why have you chosen the path you're on? Where are you going next?In this workshop, we’ll focus on shaping and refining your personal style in ceramics by delving into introspective exercises and discussions about your artistic journey. Through guided reflection, we’ll explore the motives behind your work, the emotions and ideas you aim to convey, and how your experiences shape the forms you create. We’ll also examine how different three-dimensional forms can evoke particular emotions, relationships, or dynamics, and how choices in shape, texture, and structure can speak to your personal narrative. Additionally, we’ll look at the work of ceramic artists whose pieces reflect a strong sense of identity and individualism, offering insight into how you can develop a style that is distinctly 'you.' Whether your work is functional or sculptural, this workshop will help you understand the deeper emotional and aesthetic impact of your forms and where your artistic journey might lead next.
This workshop is intended for students with an existing ceramics practice with knowledge of fundamentals in either throwing or handbuilding. There will be some clay exercises in the later portion but the instructor won't be going in-depth on technical aspects of making. If altering leather-hard pieces or decorating bisqueware is your jam, you can bring a piece or two you won't mind experimenting on. Otherwise, we'll be working with wet clay.
