About this Event
WITH SPECIAL GUESTS DANNY TAYLOR (UNITE BINWORKER REP) AND ATTILA THE STOCKBROKER
The Birmingham binworkers have been on strike for over a year now (and on all out strike since May), fighting a life-changing £8,000 a year pay cut from a particularly disgusting Labour council.
If they can get away with doing this to a well-organised group of workers in the largest council in Europe, then no council worker is safe - and our public services come under even greater threat.
That's why support has flooded in from all over the country, most notably with the three Megapickets organised by StrikeMap and the recent wave of direct action by supporters to shut down depots - necessary because of the disgusting injunction brought by the council back in May to stop the binworkers - and their union, UNITE - picketing their own workplaces.
With a desperate and deeply unpopular council now seeking a persons unknown injunction to stop any protests at depots at all, what can we do now to support the binworkers and help them win this crucial dispute?
Join UNITE binworker rep DANNY TAYLOR and supporters to watch Reel News films of the story of the strike so far alongside other classic rank and file struggles - and then let's plan some action. With local elections in May, the council are on the ropes; let's work out what we can do to help finish them off and help the binworkers achieve a famous victory.
PLUS: SPECIAL GUEST ATTILA THE STOCKBROKER
We're very pleased to welcome Attila to do a short set during the evening - and you might even be able to get a copy of his forthcoming book "Heart on My Sleeve", his collected works from 1980 - 2020.
TONIGHT'S FILMS: (FIRST FILM STARTS 7:30PM)
1) Rank and file action from Argentina (7mins)
Many of the tactics we use now rank and file struggles originate from Latin America. For more inspiration, some clips of the piqueteros movement in Argentina in 2002, which was instrumental in bringing down the government in one of the high points of the anti-capitalist movement.
2) Can't beat the rank and file (13mins)
In construction, there is an unbroken thread of rank and file action stretching back over 60 years. I This film looks at some of the great victories by the construction rank and file - from the 1972 building workers strike to the No2ESO! campaign in 2021 - which will hopefully give some ideas of action we could all take in the binworkers' strike.
3) Birmingham binworkers strike: the story so far (25mins)
The story so far of a dispute that is being watched closely by councils across the country. If they get away with an attack of this magnitude in the largest council in Europe, it will lay the ground for huge cuts elsewhere. But if the binworkers win it could be the start of a serious push for more funding for our cash starved public services.
As always, FREE but please order a free ticket so we can get an idea of numbers :-)
