Join us as the Office of Human Rights & Equity screens the award-winning documentary Descendant. Directed by filmaker Margaret Brown, the film chronicles the story behind Africatown in Alabama, and the descendants of the last known enslaved Africans brought to the United States aboard the Clotilda in 1860, despite the U.S. having outlawing international slave trade.
The film features excerpts from Zora Neale Hurston's book Barracoon: The Story of the Last "Black Cargo" and interviews with Cudjo Lewis, a survivior of the Clotida.
Reel Enlightenment attendees will have an opportunity to win a raffled copy of Zora Neale Hurston's book Barracoon: The Story of the Last "Black Cargo"book that evening.
This screening is being presented as part of the Howard County Office of Human Rights & Equity's Reel Enlightenment Series.
