About this Event

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Reconnec presents a workshop led by special guest Miss Rose, who is a London-based Dancehall performer and instructor. Join us on Sunday 2nd October to explore how we can move together and form connections with each other through dance. With the Reconnec video installation by artist Juliette Gampert as a starting point, we will focus on “social dances” – moves which are named in specific songs, becoming familiar and gathering everyone to dance them together at parties when the song is played.

The event draws its title from Gampert’s work Reconnec, which was a result of multiple research journeys to Jamaica working with and forming long-lasting relationships with the Dancehall community there. In the installation, the artist immerses visitors in the rituals and temporality of Kingston’s Dancehall street parties. Through interviews with important figures within the community, such as Orville Xpressionz, Kimiko Versatile, and DHQ Danger, Gampert contextualises Dancehall as an emancipatory movement, exploring its decolonial power and showing how bodies can carry and share cultural knowledge passed down through generations.

Reconnec brings the party to London, creating a space for people to learn together and create moments of collectivity. It highlights the liberating potential of afrodescending cultures such as Dancehall, creating spaces for care and community.

The workshop will last for a total of 1h 15min include warming up, and there will be breaks where necessary. The workshop is open to all levels and all bodies, and requires NO prior knowledge or experience of dance/Dancehall.

ABOUT JULIETTE GAMPERT

Juliette Gampert is a London-based artist whose work uses mediums such as video, installation, and performance to explore concepts of diaspora, the collective body, and the spiritual and self-healing dimensions of dance. Her artistic research is motivated by her own practice of Dancehall, used as a way to reconnect with her Jamaican heritage. In 2020, she obtained a grant from the Cantonal Fund for Contemporary Art of Geneva, to create Reconnec. The film is the result of a research journey undertaken through travels to Jamaica between 2018 and 2020, where she became familiar with the dancehall community, interviewing dancehall creators, partying and participating in dance classes.
