About this Event
Join JIMENA Creative Writing Workshop with Sarah Sasson. In this workshop, participants will read, explore, and write their own personal stories. Through the lens of Jewish heritage and family narratives, we will discover how storytelling becomes a powerful tool for understanding our identity and aspirations.
As an Iraqi Jewish writer and poet, Sarah Sasson found her voice through her family's story. The Jewish journey spans across seas, through persecutions, and encompasses countless narratives that have brought us to where we are today. By sharing our personal family stories, we reroot and reclaim our identity, honoring both our ancestors' experiences and our own. Together, we build interconnected Jewish communal strength and resilience.
About Sarah Sasson: Sarah is an Australian-born, Iraqi Jewish writer, poet, and educator. She is the author of the award-winning picture book "Shoham's Bangle" and "This is Not a Cholent." Her poetry micro-chapbook "This is Why We Don't Look Back" was awarded the Harbor Review Jewish Women's Poetry prize. She is also the co-author of "The In-Between," a female literary dialogue about identity and belonging with an Arab Christian and Austrian-Serbian writer.
Her work has appeared in Consequence Forum, Hadassah Magazine, Michigan Quarterly, and other publications. She serves as an editorial advisor for Distinctions: A Sephardi and Mizrahi Journal and holds an MFA in English Literature and Poetry from Bar Ilan University.
Sarah's writing explores her Iraqi Jewish history, refugee experiences and resilience, and the rich, 2,600-year-old culture of Babylonian Jews, with a special focus on Middle Eastern women's experiences. She currently lives in Jerusalem with her four boys and a Belgian Malinois she found at her local coffeeshop. For more information visit www.sarahsassoon.com
