Reclaim your urban soils with the LA Urban Soil Social Impact Collaborative at MudTown Farms in Watts!
About this Event

What to expect:
-Participatory Soil Mixing - join us in closing the loop in our waste stream by mixing clean, local excavated sediment with organic compost. Your participation is key, so be ready to get your hands dirty. Weʻll be mixing a big pile of soil the old fashioned way using shovels! Then youʻll get some fresh soil to take home with you.
-Ecosystem Resources - Free tour of MudTown Farms, educational info sessions from our partners on urban soil, composting, remediation, and cubic yards of other resources to help you reclaim urban soil. Feel free to drop in, or stay for a while. Weʻre here to develop soil resource systems for community-scale ecological restoration.
-Free Soil Testing - Drop in from 10am - 12:30pm to get your soil tested for heavy metal contaminants and receive a consultation from one of our experts on how you can minimze exposure to contaminants and make the most of your urban soil. Instructions on sample collection are available below.
We will test soil samples for contaminants using portable XRF analyzers and share the results with participants live at the event. Experts will be available to interpret the test results and discuss strategies to minimize exposure to contaminated soils if they are present. Soil testing will be conducted on a first come, first served, basis. Wait times will depend on availability and capacity of XRF operators and available soil consultants. Feel free to browse the other activities at the event while you wait for your soil sample to be completed and receive your consultation from one of our experts. Instructions for collection listed below.
