In November, Fr. Robert will lead a reading group on these two works of T. S. Eliot. The Waste Land (1923) overwhelms the reader with the world of the modern age—sterile, fragmented, bored. Four Quartets (1943) sees this as the result of choices that could have been, and yet could be, made differently; and drawing on the wisdom of Christian mysticism, Indic tradition, and Buddhist scripture it points the way to a better spiritual struggle. We will read the both of them as a dialogue across twenty of the most important years of Eliot’s life and poetry. The seminar begins on 4 November and will run for six weeks, meeting on Mondays at 7:30 p.m. at St. Dunstan’s.
