Christians in every generation strive to live complete Christian lives (Matt 5:48; Col 1:28). But what makes a Christian life “complete?” This Reading a Christian Classic cohort, led by Dr. Devin White, will delve into one of the most influential texts ever to address the question of the complete Christian life, The Life of Antony, and aim to make connections between early Christianity and modern Christian formation. Written in the fourth-century by the bishop-theologian Athanasius, this biography recounts the life of Antony the Great, one of the most well-known “Desert Fathers” and an inspiration for the monastic movement. Participants in this group will enjoy Athanasius’ engaging narrative and build connections between early Christian and contemporary views of spiritual formation.Dr. Devin White is a Fellow in Biblical Studies at the Lumen Center. He is also the Associate Pastor of Christian Education at High Point Church in Madison, WI. A scholar of the New Testament and Early Christianity, Devin is the author of Teacher of the Nations: Ancient Educational Traditions and Paul’s Argument in 1 Corinthians 1-4 (De Gruyter, 2017) and a forthcoming monograph on Pauline hermeneutics.
The content will be broken up into five sessions:
Week 1: Augustine Confessions (Augustine recounts how the Life of Antony precipitated his conversion to Christianity)
Week 2: Life of Antony (Antony’s early life, call to the desert)
Week 3: Life of Antony (Antony’s teaching)
Week 4: Life of Antony (Antony’s miracles and virtues)
Week 5: Life of Antony (Antony’s refutation of pagan philosophers, growing fame, and death)
