About this Event

About this session //

For the May and June sessions of READERS we will be reading an excerpt from Photo, Phyto, Proto, Nitro by Edinburgh-based Melissa McCarthy. What's even more exciting is that Melissa will be joining us at both events to offer her own personal insight and answer questions about the text! We have stocked this title in-store since moving to 6 William Street and you guys have absolutely loved it. Here's a few quotes from the critics, too:

"Melissa McCarthy shifts the focus to photography and, as its jingle title advertises, makes completely new stopovers and connections that indelibly change how we look at and through the medium.”

“McCarthy approaches writing as a generous reader, as a detective, as a rummager among archives, as an archaeologist, as a photographic developing agent."

“Fucking hell McCarthy – that is top notch.”

Joining READERS //

READERS is open to all regardless of academic background. While it is encouraged to read as much of the text as possible, please don’t be put off joining us if you cannot finish the text for any reason.

A digital copy of the excerpt will be sent out to bookers prior to the event.

If you'd rather, we will have physical copies of the full book available to puchase both in advance of the session and at the event. Of course as Melissa will be joining us you'll also have the opportunity to get these signed by the author!

Ticketing //

This is a ticketed event with limited capacity and you must book in order to attend. Tickets work on a sliding scale, and all proceeds help AGITATE continue to operate and programme events like this. Half of all proceeds from ticket sales go to the business, and half go to the speaker/host. The recommended ticket price is £6. Thank you - your donations ensure the survival of spaces like this, and allow us to keep a sliding scale system in place.

Accessibility //

The venue is wheelchair accessible, including the toilet facilities. There is private breakout space available too for anyone who would benefit from this.

Format //

There are always two groups, one in-person in Edinburgh and one online. Digital copies of the selected text will be circulated in good time before the session.

  • Book on this page to join online: Wednesday 19 June, 6:30 - 8PM.
  • Book to join in-person at 6 William Street, Wednesday 16 May, 6:30-8PM.

About the author //

I write non-fiction: my 2023 book Photo, Phyto, Proto, Nitro (Sagging Meniscus), uses an examination of flowers, photography, and explosions to propose a way of picturing the self through literature, history, and memory. I’m interested in recurring figures – doubles, reflexions, repetitions, reprints, echoes – and in how similar ideas and imagery have a way of resurfacing in disparate times and places, in different mediums and spheres of activity.

I’ve just finished a collaboration with photographer Norman McBeath, called Exceptional Subjects. My previous book Sharks, Death, Surfers: An Illustrated Companion (Sternberg, 2019) considers navigation, cinema, and the art-form of the obituary, while exploring the balance between life and death. I’m a contributing editorforExacting Clam magazine. For more on my writing, and radio and film work, seehttp://sharksillustrated.org.

READERS was created by Mayanne Soret and is now facilitated by Kat Gollock and Christina Webber. If you have any questions, please feel free to email [email protected]
