Drowning in research papers? Learn a smarter system to find, prioritize, and understand papers without reading everything.
About this Event

Graduate students are expected to read large volumes of research papers, yet few are ever taught how to read them efficiently. This often leads to hours spent stuck on dense papers, uncertainty about what is worth reading, and burnout.

This studio introduces a practical, structured approach to academic reading that helps you save time while improving understanding. Using tools such as Connected Papers and SciSpace, along with the Three-Pass reading method, you’ll learn how to quickly map a research field, identify the most relevant papers, and focus your effort where it matters most.

The session will be hands-on: participants will practice selecting key papers, skimming strategically to make informed keep-or-drop decisions, and using AI-assisted tools to break down complex technical sections. No prior familiarity with the topic area is required - the methods apply across engineering disciplines.

Please bring a laptop to participate fully. Snacks will be provided.

This Engineering Grad Studio is presented as part of the at the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Equity and Inclusion Initiatives at the School of Engineering. For more information about the program and upcoming events, visit .
