Join us for an afternoon of experimental environmental docs exploring London's Great Smog, the journey of an African rock, animated choir-led critters and more inbetween, all connected by their ability to viscerally show the intersection of art and environmental sustainability.
As part of the film experience, enjoy a brown bag lunch. It will include a sandwich, a bottle of water, a piece of fruit, a chocolate bar, and a bag of crisps. Lunch will be available from 1:15pm in the QFT foyer, where you can collect and enjoy it during the screening.
My Name is Oil (2025) (Director: Igor Smola; Countries: Azerbaijan, Singapore; Language: Azerbaijani; Duration: 14 minutes)
Drawing on the thoughts of philosopher Reza Negarestani, Igor Smola’s speculative eco-doc presents oil as a metaphysical entity with seemingly mystical qualities, channelling the spirits of the many plants and animals whose decay has facilitated the creation of this apparently miraculous material.
The Rock Speaks (2024) (Directors: Francois Knoetze, Amy Louise Wilson; Countries: South Africa, The Democratic Republic of Congo; Languages: English, Swahili; Duration: 6 minutes)
In this hybrid AI documentary, a rock's journey is traced through a history of colonialism, segregation and extractivism.
2mm (2024) (Director: Mona Jelic; Country: Switzerland; Language: Serbian; Duration: 8 mins)
As the EU's green energy ambitions grow, a rural Serbian community becomes a political battleground for Europe's electric future. Plans for a massive lithium mine - set to be one of the largest on the continent - spark fierce national opposition.
Veiled City (2023) (Director: Natalie Cubides-Brady; Country: UK; Language: English; Duration: 13 mins)
A speculative city symphony inspired by London’s Great Smog of 1952. Merging reality with fiction, The Veiled City invites us to understand the smog in the context of the present-day climate crisis.
Rise Age (2024) (Director: Tatjana Theuer; Country: Germany; Language: No dialogue; Duration: 5 mins)
Fluorescent, animated critters groove through a coastal world, led by a superior choir. Their carefree crawl, however, is increasingly disturbed by the rising seas.
This screening will feature an in-person introduction.
