Re-imagine:
Shifting perspectives on EDI in the ADM faculty and beyond


Join us on Wednesday 26th June 2024 in P063 The Shell, Parkside, for a one-day symposium for staff within the Faculty of Arts, Design, and Media.


Developed by the College Academic Leads for EDI, this event will explore and reflect on key EDI themes and how these may impact or influence our teaching, learning, and research. There will be keynote speakers, interactive workshops, and opportunities for networking and participation throughout the day. Refreshments and lunch will be provided for attendees.

This event is about meaningful interaction, inclusive conversations, and a chance for staff to get new perspectives on important issues.

Dr Kate Carruthers-Thomas

Walking the Wire: bringing a feminist criticality to diversity work in the university

From her perspective as a feminist academic researching gender and higher education and a diversity worker managing the Athena Swan Charter at BCU, Kate considers the challenges and opportunities of bringing a feminist criticality to diversity work; of living authentically in the gap between words and deeds in the neoliberal university.

Dr Ifedapo Francis Awolowo

Empathy, Equity, and Eradicating Racism: Transforming teaching, learning, and research in UK higher education

This keynote address will explore the paradigm-shifting issues of empathy, equity, and eradicating racism in UK higher education. It will unveil the transformative power of love and understanding in fostering inclusive learning environments, emphasising the groundbreaking ASPIRE project’s impact in advancing Black students’ attainment and progression.

Jaskirt Dhaliwal-Boora: Reflecting on Care, Body, Space, and Creative Health – a discussion-based workshop using photographic prompts from her exhibition at IKON

Avery Cunningham & Kat Grover: Understanding LGBTQ+ issues in HE

12:45 Lunch (The Shell) - 1 hour

13:30 Workshops 3 & 4 (attendees to select one) - 45 minutes

Ross Strong: Religion and Spirituality in the Context of Higher Education

Kevin Nicholls: Disability Awareness: Inclusive practice in teaching and assessment

14:15 Time for attendees to move back to The Shell / have a comfort break

14:30 Keynote speaker 3 (The Shell) - 30 minutes

Daniel Alcorn & Luke Tonge, directors of Birmingham Design

“You can’t improve what you don’t measure.”

This keynote will explore how Birmingham Design’s knowledge of the local creative community – rooted in listening – has led to behavioural shifts in how they approach events and education. They'll explore some of their findings from the Birmingham Design Annual Survey, and how these sit alongside the national picture.
