Unfortunately, Brian Jackson is unable to present this month. In his place, Cara Cowan Watts will be presenting an exciting scholarship information seminar.
Participants are encouraged to bring a pen and paper and be prepared for an hour-long “brain dump” packed with practical strategies for finding and applying for scholarships. Students and families who have attended Cara’s workshops and applied her proven tips and techniques have often been able to piece together enough scholarship funding to achieve a full ride. These are lifelong tools that can continue to benefit students throughout their educational journey.
Cara Cowan Watts is a business owner, engineer, educator, and former Cherokee Nation Tribal Councilor with a passion for advancing education and STEM opportunities for Native students. She currently leads Tulsa Pier Drilling, overseeing operations, business development, and project management for the company since 2016. Cara is also the founder of Cherokee Star DBA, which has provided consulting, facilitation, and education solutions throughout Indian Country for more than twenty years.
Cara holds degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Telecommunications Management from Oklahoma State University and earned her Ph.D. in Biosystems Engineering from OSU in 2015. She is a longtime advocate for Native students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and has served in leadership roles with the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), including President of the Oklahoma Professional Chapter. In 2020, she received the AISES Ely S. Parker Award for her contributions to STEM education and leadership in Indian Country.
Cara and her family established the Cowan Family Engineering Scholarship at Oklahoma State University to honor the legacy of education and support future generations of students pursuing engineering careers.
Bring your family and friends for an afternoon of culture, community, and inspiration. We hope to see you there!
