RCC Winter Solstice Gathering: Supporting Our Neighbors staying warm this season! Join us on Saturday, December 21, 2024, as we come together around the central fire pit in Dufferin Grove Park for a gathering to support Toronto’s homeless community this winter.
In the spirit of the Winter Solstice, we are gathering to spread warmth, compassion, and hope through donations of food, clothing, and community-led solutions.
Event Details:
Date: Saturday, December 21, 2024
Time: 11 AM - 4 PM
Location: Dufferin Grove Park, Toronto
We'll be gathering around the fire pit for a cozy afternoon of roasting marshmallows, sharing stories, and enjoying hot drinks. This is a family-friendly event—bring friends and loved ones! There will be pop up musical performances, flow art and workshops from expressive arts therapists from our artist's collective.
How You Can Help:
Donate Winter Gear: We’re collecting warm coats, Sweaters, hats, scarves, gloves, boots and other warming essentials like hand warmers, sleeping bags and blankets.
Many of our unhoused neighbors need their tents winterized to stay safe and warm. To address this urgent need, we’re accepting community contributions to create insulated tent foundations. Each foundation requires 4 pallets and 2 pieces of 4x8 plywood, along with insulation.
If people are able to bring wood palettes, plywood donations, as well as clean carpets or rugs, Tarps, tent pegs and rope or twine for tarping, along with any form of Vapor Barrier radiant insulation, if possible.) we can weather proof more of the tent spaces immediately.
Bring Food: Hot food and drinks to share, picnic snacks, and non-perishable items are all welcomed and recommended. (Dried meat, trail mix, protein bars, canned meat and vegetables, protein drinks, fruit cups, shelf stable snacks are preferred for encampment supplies)
Bring firewood donations for the fire today and any that we can leave as on-going supplies for the encampment stockpile. (Butane starters are also appreciated)
Share Solutions: Local city representatives and neighborhood community advocates will join us to discuss crowd-sourced ideas for housing and support that can be implemented in a real life, real time dynamic of immediate impact. We would love to engage with you all on how to use our city and community resources better in order to address the unprecedented housing crisis we are being faced with this winter season.
This community effort is about more than donations-- it's a chance to show solidarity, offer practical support, and brainstorm lasting solutions for our neighbors facing homelessness. Every contribution toward this common ground issue, whether big or small, makes a difference to all of us who live with various forms of housing insecurity.
Let’s make this winter a season of compassion and action!
