Screening and conversation with PERTIMIG Malaysia, Voices of Domestic Workers and Okui Lala
About this Event

Hosted at Mimosa House, the afternoon will start with a video screening of Rasa & Asa (27min, 2021), followed by conversation between PERTIMIG Malaysia (Indonesian Migrant Domestic Workers Association) and Voice of Domestic Workers (United Kingdom) as well as a sharing of behind-the-scenes of the video from Okui Lala (Artist/Cultural Worker).

Rasa dan Asa is a video that follows PERTIMIG activities and it's members' journey during the Covid-19 pandemic. Alongside recordings of online events between June and September 2021, most of the footage in this film was shot remotely by the PERTIMIG members on their smartphones during the Movement Control Order (partial lockdown) in Malaysia. PERTIMIG is currently using the documentary to outreach to other domestic workers in Malaysia.

Okui Lala (Malaysia) is an artist and cultural worker. Her practice spans video and performance to community engagement. Okui’s work explores themes of identities, diaspora and belonging through the performances of domestic acts or vocational labor, such as sewing, cooking, conversing and building. Okui also facilitates visual workshops with nonprofit organizations and social groups that work with various communities in Malaysia and Japan.

PERTIMIG, Indonesian Migrant Domestic Workers Association, is an independent organization fighting for the rights of migrant domestic workers. Our vision is to advocate for decent work and welfare for Indonesian migrant domestic workers and their families in Malaysia. We demand protection for domestic workers through the national laws and regulatory framework. At this moment, PERTIMIG has 140 members and is an affiliate of International Domestic Workers Federation (IDWF).

The Voice of Domestic Workers is an education and campaigning group (previously called Justice 4 Domestic Workers) calling for justice and rights for Britain’s thousands of migrant domestic workers. We are a membership organisation for over 1000 migrant domestic workers who work in private households in the UK. We practise community organising to raise awareness of rights; campaign and lobby; educate our members and solve practical problems members face like homelessness, abuse and accessing immigration advice.
