About this Event
Have nights out lost their edge? Same old mates? Same old pubs?
Learn a new skill, start a new hobby, and bring joy to your miserable life with Rapper Sword dancing!
Rapper is a fast and exciting form of folk dance from the north of England. No Bells. No Hankies. Just Swords.
We’re hosting FREE give-it-a-go sessions looking for new blood to join our award-winning rapper sword team.
No experience required. We'll teach you everything you need to know. You don't even need to be a folky, just willing to have some fun.
Dancers must be able to count up to 8 (or at least 4), have a good firm grip and be male/masc-presenting.
Musicians of any gender and none are also very welcome to join. If you want to play for a dance team, we want to meet you.
If you decide to join the team you too could enjoy our sword dancing crawls, showing off in some of the best pubs and dance spots across London, the UK, even the world. You'll attend many of the best folk festivals for free and learn how to do a back flip.
Join us down in the Cecil Sharp House bar at 8pm.
We'll probably head to the local pub afterwards. You're very welcome to join us but no presh, no stress.
WHAT IS RAPPER?:
Five people whirl round at speed, connected by their flexible metal swords (rappers), performing a series of high-octane and occasionally acrobatic figures (like backflips), tying the swords into a series of knots and shapes to display. The dancers are accompanied by a musician playing a suitable double jig, and hard-soled shoes punctuate the dance with percussive stepping.
Rapper was traditionally danced in the local pub. It’s still at its best when experienced at close quarters, in the confines of a densely packed pub, which adds a certain frisson. Thrales embrace this custom with regular monthly tours, dancing in the pubs of London in search of lovely wooden floors and plenty of tasty beer.
Come and join us.
