About this Event
A few years ago, there was a reading group on campus centered around ethical and social issues surrounding the rapid advancements in technology. We are seeking to reinvigorate this reading group for faculty, staff, and administrators across all disciplines. The past couple years have underscored the necessity for us to recognize, understand, and adapt to technological changes.
In the spirit of Where Innovation Meets Humanity, this reading group looks to engage all stakeholders in these issues by providing participants with an opportunity to lead discussion. This group will establish a rotation of discussion leaders across all disciplines to ensure all perspectives are presented and valued. We hope this will illuminate discipline specific blind spots.
The reading group will meet once a month during the workday. Ideally, we will meet around lunchtime on campus given general availability of interested readers. Each discussion will be scheduled to last one hour but we will have a flexible end time to allow spirited discussion to organically conclude. Each meeting will have lunch provided for readers who RSVP and will be hosted in the Lemieux Library.
Choosing what to read will be a group effort, however, we suggest starting with preparatory reading for Fr. Paolo Benanti's month-long stay with us in July. Fr. Benanti is the president of the Artificial Intelligence Commission on Information in Italy, is a member of the United Nations Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence and is a member of the Rome Call for AI Ethics as an advisor to Pope Francis. With such an influential scholar in the space coming to campus, it would be rewarding to have a cadre of engaged thinkers ready to discuss relevant topics with him in-depth.
