Ramblin’ ‘Round is a group ceramics pop-up curated by Genevieve Vanzandt. It coincides with NCECA for a one day event on Thursday, March 26th.NCECA’s 60th conference, Volumes, takes place in Detroit, Michigan, March 25 - 28, 2026
This pop-up is free to attend and open to the general public. No NCECA conference pass is required.
This pop-up celebrates the restless, road-worn spirit of artists who gather, disperse, and find one another again across miles and time zones. Inspired by the Woody Guthrie song of the same name, this exhibition embraces the rambling path — the late-night kiln unloads, the cross-country moves, the chance meetings that become lasting collaborations.
Featuring ceramic artists from across the country, Ramblin’ ‘Round brings together makers whose paths first crossed in studios, residencies, conferences, art fairs and classrooms- scattered far and wide. Though rooted in clay, each artist carries distinct regional influences, personal histories, and material investigations. The result is a dynamic collection of work that reflects movement — geographic, creative, and communal.
Set against the energy of NCECA in Detroit, this pop-up is both reunion and introduction: a space to reconnect, to share new work, and to celebrate the friendships and creative kinships formed along the way. Like Guthrie’s wandering refrain, Ramblin’ ‘Round honors the freedom, grit, and interconnectedness that define life as a working artist.
Join us as we gather — just for a moment — before rambling on.

Volumes, the 60th conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), explores material-driven experimentation and conceptual frameworks that animate art created through clay. The essential energy of voices and sounds of the Detroit region catalyzes this conference’s theme.
The meaning of volumes most integrally embodied in the 2026 conference theme lies within unseeable spaces of our clay works and the firing chambers that transform them. Volumes are forces that give power and shape to the world we experience. Detroit is a place that embodies this sense of interior energy. A real and metaphorical foundry of creative ambition and craftsmanship shaped by waves of migration, industry, and resilience, Detroit has volumes to teach us.
