This is a 3 hour workshop and attendees must be over 16 years old.Raku is a traditional 16th century Japanese pottery technique that has been used to create surfaces that are rich in character and full of variation.
The word "Raku" is often translated as happiness in the accident. That phrase captures the entire philosophy, as each piece is shaped by fire, smoke and chance, so no two outcomes ever match. This is due to the dramatic post firing reduction steps that creates bold crackles, metallic flashes & smoke patterns.
On this workshop you will have different techniques to try. You will be doing 3 pots, each using different techniques.
All protective equipment will be provided. Natural fibre trousers (jeans) and enclosed shoes must be worn and long hair tied back.
On this workshop you will learn about the process of Raku firing,
Glaze 2 pots with different Raku glaze, (crackle and coloured)
Decorate 1 pot using the Naked Raku technique,
Participate in the Raku firing, including addition of combustible materials,
Cleaning of glazed pots and waxing of the Naked Raku pot.
At the end of the Raku workshop you will take home your 3 finished Raku pots!
This workshop costs £90- per person and includes all materials and equipment.
