Drew Wallace will be joining us. He is the Program Coordinator at the Water Pollution Control Plant. One of the programs is the MS4 program. MS4 stands for Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System. It refers to a system designed to manage stormwater runoff in urban areas, preventing pollution and protecting water quality. MS4s are typically owned or operated by municipalities and include various infrastructure such as pipes, ditches, and other conveyance systems that transport stormwater to local water bodies without mixing it with sewage. In the City of Auburn our storm water collection system and sanitary sewer lines are about 85% separated. This means that those separated storm water lines discharge directly to a ditch stream or Cedar Creek without being treated. Any storm water runoff carries with it pollution that is on the ground to these inlets and then to a water body. This is why as the Auburns MS4 coordinator, I take every opportunity I can to educate our community on what storm water pollution looks like and how we can help protect our water resources.
