🏛️ Bron y Garth: A Building Through Time
From Victorian workhouse to community hospital
⏳ Workhouse Era (1839–1930)
Built in 1839, this Grade II listed building began life as the Ffestiniog Union Workhouse, designed to house up to 150 poor and destitute people.
Life inside was harsh:
Inmates slept on wire beds with no mattresses
Food was earned by breaking stones in vagrants’ cells
A separate “cottage” building isolated those with infectious diseases
By the 1890s, the workhouse was officially described as “inadequate”, largely due to chronic staff shortages.
🏠 Public Assistance Institution & Care Home (1930–1954)
Following the decline of the workhouse system, the site was taken over by Merionethshire Council in 1930.
Redesignated as the Ffestiniog Public Assistance Institution
Shifted focus from punishment to welfare
In 1954, it became a council-run care home for the elderly
🏥 NHS Hospital – Bron y Garth (1948–2009)
With the founding of the National Health Service in 1948, the site officially became Bron y Garth Hospital.
Gradually modernised over the decades
Operated as a community hospital, serving the local area
Closed in 2009, with services transferred to Ysbyty Alltwen, Tremadog
Bron y Garth reflects nearly 170 years of social care history, charting the shift from Victorian poverty relief to modern healthcare.
