QUIVERS
Melbourne, Australia

Quivers, of Melbourne, Australia, have a third release of cathartic jangle-damaged pop, Oyster Cuts, coming out via Merge Records and more North American dates than ever to celebrate. Mostly headline, there’s also some support dates for David Kilgour (The Clean), and Merge pop leaders Superchunk. The road to this moment has been a winding one, the best kind, with a performance for KEXP, US and Australian tours, and even R.E.M. sliding into the band’s DMs with fire emojis after their full cover of the band’s Out of Time. For musical reference points this new album is propelled by melodies that recall Galaxie 500 and The Pretenders, with both Sam and now Bella taking lead vocals and group vocals from everyone. It’s sunshine pop with blood in the water, with tape loops that circle like sharks, and twin guitars that glisten while the bass and drums roll in like waves. Pitchfork described Quivers' last record as “the sound of bedsit 1980s college-rock thrust into the big-tent environs of 21st-century indie, like a Go-Betweens with Coachella-conquering ambitions….and it’s absolutely glorious”, but Quivers only believe in a ragged glory, that live music should sometimes fall apart and be a genuine interaction with each audience. So they will continue to confront love and grief and the glow of friendship from all angles, and hope to meet you on the next winding road ahead.

BRNDA

BRNDA is a four-piece from DC with a few rules: No covers, No love songs. Simple enough, right? Think again. After perusing through the late 70s, 80s, and 2010s for musical detritus, it was discovered that only the least ostentatious, most off-kilter sound is fit for BRNDA. And so, if you find yourself unable to put your finger on just what you’re hearing, it is because BRNDA is not just some rehashed comfort listening.

DIM WIZARD
Washington, DC

It’s tempting to call David Combs a pop scientist. From his work in the ebullient D.C. power pop band Bad Moves to his work as Dim Wizard, Combs’s songs are so tightly crafted and explosively catchy, it feels like they were made by carefully tipping test tubes into beakers and making precise notations in a spreadsheet entitled GOOD HOOKS. However, as the name itself suggests, Dim Wizard proves that Combs is more alchemist than scientist, combining ingredients to create something completely unexpected and magical. In the studio, Dim Wizard is a collaborative recording process where he brings musicians, songwriters, and producers together to all contribute to a single song. On the road, Combs assembles a group of local friends to perform an interpretation of the same songs–each one unique. Every Dim Wizard show, like every Dim Wizard song, is a true one-of-one, a moment in time when likeminded musicians get together, pour all their ideas into a cauldron, and stir until it forms something surprising and, invariably, catchy as hell.
