Exposure and response prevention (ERP) remains the gold standard for treating OCD, yet it’s not always sufficient on its own. A major contributor to persistent symptoms is repetitive negative thinking (RNT), which is fueled and sustained by negative metacognitive beliefs. Rather than targeting the content of clients’ thoughts, therapists can focus on modifying this cognitive–attentional syndrome using metacognitive strategies. In this session, you’ll explore a client-centered model framed as a “serious game,” where clients learn first to challenge their perspective on intrusive thoughts, and then to apply practical, moment‑by‑moment tactics whenever OCD tries to take over.REID WILSON, PhD, a clinical psychologist in Chapel Hill, NC, has spent 40 years in the field of self-help for anxiety disorders and OCD. He directs the free self-help site “anxieties.com.” In 1991 he co-authored with Dr. Edna Foa the first-ever self-help book on exposure and response prevention (ERP), “Stop Obsessing: How to Overcome Your Obsessions and Compulsions.” His latest book is called “Quiet Your OCD Brain: A Game-Changing Metacognitive Workbook to Defeat Obsessions and Compulsions,” and his current online self-help course is called “OCD and the 6-Moment Game: Strategies and Tactics.” He is a Founding Clinical Fellow of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) and Fellow of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT).
