quickly, quickly
The new quickly, quickly EP finds Portland, Oregonâs Graham Jonson back in his home studio, engrossed in â60s psychedelic soul music, imagining some bygone era where it was all about the drum sounds and tape decay. He calls it Easy Listening; the songs are short and inviting, modest yet loaded with ideas. Each started with the drum part, a loose grid for Jonson to paint his idiosyncratic psych-pop across, again playing nearly every instrument. The set follows his 2021 LP, The Long And The Short of It, the 22-year-old musicianâs debut on Ghostly International, a coming-of-age jump from the chill beats-oriented corners of the internet to a full-fledged songwriting project with hi-fi sophistication. The moment culminated with Pitchforkâs Rising profile, âquickly, quicklyâs Technicolor Pop Bursts Beyond the Algorithm,â and kickstarted the formation of his 6-piece live band for a run of exploratory shows along the west coast. But as the tangible demands for his music pulled him outward and some growing pains in his personal life ensued, Jonson focused his energy back inside; to the comforts of home recording, filling his space with more gear and sessions with friends. Maybe a bit of a droll title for a hard time, Easy Listening briefly pauses for air, offering five of his breeziest basement jams for public enjoyment.
Vinyl Williams
Vinyl Williams is the multi-sensory project of Los Angeles-based artist and musician Lionel Williams. Williams began making music under the alias in 2007 and has since gained a reputation for his unique blend of psychedelic pop & dream pop, as well as his maximalist 3D art & interactive worlds.
Williamsâ music is characterized by its lush and immersive soundscapes, with layers of elusive instrumentation and vocals, creating dreamy and hypnotic atmospheres. Drawing inspiration from a wide variety of sources, he's leaned toward likeminded self-recording artists such as Robin Guthrie, Patrick Flagle of Women & Cindy Lee, A.R. Kane, Greg Saunier of Deerhoof, Curt Boettcher, Martin Newell of The Cleaners From Venus, and Todd Rundgren. He has also collaborated and shared the stage with artists of the same nature, like Chaz Bear of Toro y Moi, Ruban Nielson of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and Morgan Delt.
In addition to his work as a musician, Williams is also a visual artist and has created artwork for his own album covers, as well as interactive music videos and point-and-click websites. He is known for his vibrant colors, futuristic architecture, and abundantly biodiverse landscapes, which all reflect his interest in harmony, hidden structures of space-time, and the divine.
Williams just released his 7th full length album âAeternaâ on August 4th 2023 on his own imprint Harmony Records, adding to the momentum of an increasingly prolific potpourri of record releases.
