As part of LGBTQ+ History Month, this event will feature a lecture and documentary about queer belonging and identity in rural UK.In 2019 Timothy Allsop, a gay writer and actor, moved out of London and back to a rural space, a decision which seemed strange to many of his city friends.
With so much focus on urban LGBTQ+ culture and politics in major cities like London and New York, this lecture seeks to shift the focus onto other kinds of queer lives.
It questions the assumption that a queer life means living an aspirational, middle-class urban life, by showing the ways in which queer people are making lives for themselves in rural areas.
Through Tim's documentary and supporting oral testimonies, you will discover what it is like to come out in the country, what rural pride is like, and learn about the importance of queer rural venues and pubs.
Tim also explores why uncovering our queer rural history is important to our sense of belonging to different spaces.
At the heart of this lecture is a conversation about class and place.
