About this Event
For centuries, queer people had to hide. The Vienna city centre preserves their traces – and on this Vienna Pride Walk, we make them visible and tangible. The absence of queer history is no coincidence, but the result of systematic erasure. We respond to this forgetting with remembrance and reclamation.
Vienna is full of queer stories and queer celebrities – behind magnificent facades, in imperial chambers and in the most unassuming places. This Vienna Pride Walk lifts the veil of history and reveals what has been hidden for centuries: love, courage and identity beyond all conventions.
What to expect?
Architecture & Tragedy We visit the architectural jewels of Vienna's city centre and tell the moving story of the Vienna State Opera architects Eduard van der Nüll and August Siccard von Siccardsburg – two men whose lives were deeply intertwined.
Art & Love We discover the magical place where W. H. Auden wrote one of his most beautiful love poems, and learn more about the celebrated opera tenor and Wagner interpreter Max Lorenz.
Imperial Secrets Archduke Ludwig Viktor, Archduchess Maria Christina, Princess Isabella of Bourbon-Parma and the legendary Prince Eugene of Savoy step out of the shadow of heteronormative historiography and reveal the queer facets of their lives and loves.
