Chosen Family is a familiar trope in the movie industry because it provides the perfect reason to bring together a ragtag group of misfits and outsiders who have to learn to rely on one another for survival (think Homeward Bound, Suicide Squad, or Toy Story) or to accomplish a particular task (like Ocean’s Eleven, Paddington, or the Fast/Furious franchise). But beyond the enjoyment of watching unlikely families grow together on screen, chosen families are synonymous with the queer experience. Our chosen families have often been the ones who have gotten us through our toughest times and helped get us back on our feet. And while Hollywood has often othered queer people on screen, there has been a shift towards providing queer characters with happy endings; and a large part of that narrative involves finding one’s chosen family.
