About this Event

This is a round trip ride around Harlem that focuses on spaces inhabited or shaped by queer Black folk in the 20th and 21st centuries. We will stop at: Mt. Morris Baths, an important social center for gay African-American men in the 20th c; The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, which houses records of Black LGBT notables and groups such as Langston Hughes, Lorraine Hansberry, and James Baldwin among others along with a public library branch that was an important literary center for the community at the time; The Gumby Book studio, where the openly gay Alexander Gumby played an early and significant role in preserving and disseminating 19th and 20th century African-American history; and Elk’s Lodge, a space that hosted drag balls where drag queens, gay men, and trans women of color from several notable houses from that era competed.

Free CitiBikes and helmets are available for riders aged 16+

We will be riding about 4 miles, so be sure to bring water.

Start Location: 158 E 115th St
End Location: approx. 310 St. Nicholas Ave
