Evangeline is 9 years old and is once again having to fight the battle of Cancer. In July 2021 Evangeline was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma at the young age of 6 years old. She went through 14 chemotherapy cycles and 28 radiation treatments. She had numerous surgeries and procedures. In May 2022, Evangeline came back that she was Cancer free. The excitement was amazing and we thought that she would be able to live the rest of her life cancer free, pain free and be a kid again. For 17 months she got to do that, unfortunately that changed in December 2023.Evangeline started complaining of chest pain and left sided pain. She was in and out of the hospital for many weeks on and off. They believed it was post radiation neuropathy from the treatments before. But that was not the case.
On December 14, 2023, three days after her 9th birthday, Evangeline went for her surveillance scans to make sure the Cancer was still gone. We traveled to Rockville to Children’s for her scans, which this time seemed like it took forever. We went home once done and waited for the results.
After a few hours I received the call from Evangeline’s Oncologist with the devastating news that Evangeline’s Cancer had returned and has spread to her lungs. She has a large mass by the right ventricle at her heart, both lungs have multiple masses and she has a mass in her sternum bone. Her Cancer has metastasized. It is aggressive and the Drs told us she has a survival rate of 30%. Definitely not what a parent wants to hear. It seems like Evangeline has had to fight what seems to be her whole life to be healthy, and to be just a regular kid.
Evangeline had a picc line put in on December 22nd 2023 and started chemotherapy that day. She has received 2 cycles of chemo so far and will be starting her 3rd soon. Her picc line ended up going bad so she had surgery again and had a port put in her chest where she will be accessed for blood work and her chemo treatments. Evangeline will go through 8 chemo cycles and then 28 aggressive radiation treatments. That is the plan for now.
We have to travel over a hour and a half one way to Children’s National Hospital in Washington DC 5 days a week for her chemo and follow ups. We have 2 other children and my husband is the only one working at this time which he has had to take off several times for emergencies that have came up with Evangeline. We have never caught up from the first battle and still have bills from that time.
We are asking for any help with travel expenses, food, medications and work missed at this time. Anything is greatly appreciated.
