QI Training through Meihuaquan (Plum Flower Fist)

This class introduces the foundational principles of Meihuaquan (Plum Flower Fist) through an integrated approach to movement, somatic awareness, and qi cultivation. Rather than focusing solely on muscular strength or external technique, Meihuaquan emphasizes the cultivation of jing (physical essence), qi (vital energy), and shen (spiritual energy), supporting a holistic integration of body and mind. Participants will be introduced to the foundational Five Stances of Meihuaquan, which help cultivate grounding, strength, and the circulation of qi. The class also includes qi-related somatic exercises that focus on relaxation, opening internal space, and preparing the bodymind for practice. Through guided exploration, participants will integrate the Five Stances with simple movement materials and improvisational practices, allowing awareness and energy to expand from the inside out. The class offers an experiential introduction to the embodied principles of Meihuaquan.

Biography of Instructors
Raymond Ambrosi has trained in meihuaquan since 1990 under the renowned meihuaquan master Yan Zijie. After meeting Teacher Yan, Raymond seized every possibility to return to China to continue his studies. A chance visit to the meihuaquan homelands in rural Hebei province, attending performance attended by dozens of teams from across the North China Plain, revealed the profound intersection of martial arts training and community development.
Fascinated by these rural traditions, Raymond undertook research in rural Hebei for a Master’s degree. This only deepened his interest in a fundamental question: Why were hundreds of thousands of people investing tremendous resources and time in studying meihuaquan? Between 2005 and 2014, Raymond returned to China to begin a PhD in Sociology at Peking University, focusing on meihuaquan as intangible cultural heritage and its relationship to enhancing social cohesion. Throughout this period, Raymond studied with numerous meihuaquan teachers across rural Hebei province and in Taiwan. In Canada, Raymond studies Chen taijiquan from master Ronnie Yee.

I-Ying Wu is a somatic and improvisation practitioner whose work is deeply rooted in the Daoist philosophy of qi (Chinese internal energy). She holds a PhD in Performing Arts from the University of Northampton, UK, and served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Improvisation Studies Centre in the Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance at the University of Regina, Canada. Based in Regina, she teaches improvisation, Contact Improvisation, and Subtle Practice, a training approach she developed to cultivate subtle awareness, emergence, and interdisciplinary improvisation. She also performs and collaborates with artists across disciplines.
I-Ying has studied Chinese traditional qigong since 2002 and has trained in meihuaquan with Raymond Ambrosi since 2016, later becoming a full meihuaquan disciple at a renowned institute in Taiwan. She is also currently studying taijiquan with master Ronnie Yee.
