Find us at: The Detour Bar & Grill at 2200A Market Street (@ 15th St), SF, CA in the sunny Church street/Castro District. (You know, the area with not enough parking where you should probably take public transit to as MUNI will drop you within a block and save you a bunch of time, money, and sanity you probably will spend if you try to find parking in the area on a Saturday. Just a suggestion!)
Friends! Games! Food! Drinks! Conversation!
5-7:00pm — Monthly Queer ASL Social. All ages & signing levels. Please keep conversations accessible to all by using ASL—this is a voice off event.
After 7:00pm until ~9pm or 10pm (depends on the group) is Queer DNO. This is a time for Deaf Queer and conversationally fluent queer hearing folks who are Deaf friends, family, and allies. This event is not intended for beginning hearing ASL 1 & 2 students.
Tip: If you come later in the evening you may want to check to make sure we’re still there. (Sometimes we bar hop and sometimes hosts are tired and leave early if everyone else is tired, too.)
This event is Deaf Queer co-hosted.
Got a question? You can DM me (Allyn) and ask using text. However, I’m visually impaired so if you ask in ASL it’s better to contact the other co-host, Burnie, since he can see videocall/message from his cell phone. (Often, I need a different device with a bigger screen and I don’t always carry my iPad.) Either of us can answer questions.

Food/drink options: The Detour sells food and drinks (alcoholic and not) with some vegetarian and vegan options, some GF items (which are probably risky if you’re celiac because the kitchen isn’t).
It’s technically ADA accessible but what that actually means is there’s no steps into the place or to the two ā€œaccessibleā€ bathrooms. The bathroom is likely to require good control in a standard size wheelchair to get to it due to games and people in the way distracted playing them. Those in larger powerchairs, XL/wide manual chairs, and anyone else with a mobility device with a large footprint might find the bathroom not accessible due to difficulty getting to it (there is a public bathroom that is at Safeway nearby but obviously not ideal for everyone to need to go that far). The path to the bathroom may also present a trip and jab hazard to some blind, particularly cane users without moderate residual vision due to a sometimes tight squeeze and both stationary and movable objects connected to games sticking out at various level heights. (Some games have controls or other elements that are movable trip/jab hazards that can change how much they stick out based on where the last player left them, potentially while you are in the bathroom so it’s wise to especially pay attention for above the knee and waist level things sticking out in particular both going into the bathroom and leaving.)
The seating is padded bar stools that are high with no backs, however, there are limited low padded bar stools on the ADA accessible side of the bar itself that can be grabbed if not in use.
Lighting varies and may be a problem for those who cannot tolerate flashing light due to seizures or sensory sensitivities. We typically choose a table where there’s better lighting and lower glare facing at least one direction, but the shifting nature of things like decor means we can’t promise much. The floor itself throughout the building is smooth poured concrete, overall level and easy to use mobility devises on (eg- wheelchair, rollator, blind cane, etc) but the spacing of chairs and tables may present a challenge in some areas. We typically sit nearer to the front in an area that is very easy to get to from at least one side, though the table height and chair height is typically inappropriate for wheelchair users trying to use the table/not look up a lot. The Detour does not require masks; neither host uses them, either. (However, the space has high ceilings and the bar keeps the doors are typically open temperature permitting, so there usually is decent air circulation.) The bar itself is located in a hilly area and on enough of an incline that manual chair users will notice on the approach it and while possibly for many to navigate, it may feel like a significant incline to some manual chair users without upper arm strength, a helper, or power push assist.
Little ones: Both the venue and the social are kid friendly before 6pm (though you might want to plan to go with another family with kids or bring dollar bills/quarters if younger kids aren’t actively interested in socializing with adults as typically the crowd is older teens up so there may not be another same age kid there for them).
