About this Event
Join us for an informative conversation with Dea Bankova about her personal journey in data visualization as well as her experience crafting unique data viz and art beyond the restrictions of any single no-coding tool. In this talk, sheI’ll share how to gradually develop your data visualisation coding skills through personal projects that are both challenging and manageable, creating a state of flow where learning feels intuitive and rewarding.
We'll explore how you can use tools like Svelte and d3.js, as well as others Dea uses in her work, such as Canvas, GSAP, and Three.js. She’ll walk you through how she finds inspiration, source data, and approach the process of building visualisations and interactive pages step by step, allowing space for experimentation and growth.
Dea will also provide practical resources, including online tutorials and courses that were instrumental when she started exploring new technologies. Additionally, she’ll share insights into what has or hasn’t worked for her when using tools like ChatGPT for co-coding.
The goal is to show you how coding can open up new creative possibilities in data visualisation—helping you tackle more ambitious projects, experiment with new techniques, and build confidence without feeling overwhelmed.
About Dea:
Dea has been a data visualisation developer at Reuters Graphics for the last 3 years, working on topics ranging from US elections graphics to quantum computing to Eurovision, and previously was a visiting researcher in data viz at the University of Tokyo. She pivoted from a career as a data scientist/machine learning engineer, having worked at Microsoft and a tech startup, to pursue the more creative direction offered by data visualisation. In addition to data viz, she loves data art, front-end development and creative coding on the web.
