“Open Source Is Not Free Beer: How to Understand Licenses and Stay Out of Trouble” with Kirill Kazarin
👤 About the speaker:
Kirill has over 15 years in administration, 7+ years in DevOps, and 4 years as an SRE. He’s a speaker at conferences like DUMP and DevOops, runs the Kazarin.online Telegram channel, and teaches Linux courses at Slurm. Outside of tech, he’s also a DnD Master!
In this discussion, we’ll explore why open source isn’t just “free stuff for everyone,” but a social contract between developers and the community.
We’ll cover:
- how and why open-source licenses came to be — a bit of history, GNU, Stallman, and the philosophy behind it all;
- the differences between GPL, MIT, Apache, SSPL, Elastic License, and other popular licenses;
- why some licenses are considered “toxic” — and whether you should be worried;
- what developers and companies risk when blindly pulling dependencies with unclear or restrictive licenses;
- how businesses work with licensing, and how to choose one if you’re publishing your own code;
- how the open-source landscape is changing — Terraform, MongoDB, Elastic forks, community reactions, and what lessons we can learn.
You’ll learn:
- how to use open source safely — without ending up in legal hot water;
- why “just playing with a library” can mean “open up your entire codebase”;
- how to evaluate licenses thoughtfully, not just hope for the best.
