BRIEF HISTORY OF MAHAIWE/GREAT BARRINGTON
Great Barrington's historybegan with its Mohican inhabitants, who called the area Mahaiwe, before being settled by colonists in 1726 and officially incorporated in 1761. The town was a center of revolutionary resistance, hosting Henry Knox and the "noble train of artillery" on its way to the Siege of Boston. It prospered as a manufacturing and railroad hub in the 19th century, saw the birthplace of civil rights leader W.E.B. Du Bois and the invention of the AC electric system by William Stanley Jr., and continues today as a commercial and cultural center.
