About this Event
Join us for a special evening exploring the history and art of pysanky - the traditional Ukrainian practice of decorating Easter eggs using a wax-resist technique. In this hands-on workshop, artist Laryssa Czebiniak will guide participants through the process of creating their own beautiful pysanka while sharing the rich symbolism and history behind this ancient folk tradition.
Pysanky are created by writing on eggs with hot beeswax and dyeing them in layers to reveal intricate patterns and meaningful symbols. This centuries-old art form dates back to pre-Christian spring rituals celebrating renewal and protection, and later became a cherished Easter tradition in Ukraine.
Laryssa has been making pysanky since she was just 5 years old, continuing a beloved family tradition within the Ukrainian diaspora. After moving to New York City, she began hosting pysanky gatherings for friends, which eventually grew into public workshops for adults and children at venues such as the Ukrainian Institute of America. Her work and demonstrations have been featured at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, 92Y StreetFest, and many cultural events across the United States.
Each egg Laryssa creates is unique and handcrafted. In addition to traditional pysanky, she also creates etched eggs called travlenky and seasonal ornaments with Ukrainian motifs. Through her workshops, known as “Larysanky,” she shares this beautiful and meaningful art with anyone curious to learn.
This workshop is perfect for beginners and anyone interested in Ukrainian culture, folk art, or creative experiences.
