About this Event
Discover the great powers of Pysanky egg creatiions and design enchanting eggs using beeswax and natural dyes on real eggs in honor of this ancient Spring Equinox tradition. The process is a prayer and magical rite involving “writing” sacred symbols and prayers onto the egg.
Famous all over the world, these colorful easter eggs “pysanka” are an over 2000 years old tradition. The ancient art of “Pysanky” (meaning “to write” in Ukrainian) dates back to 1300 BC. Eggs were chosen for decoration as they embodied great powers. In ancient times the egg symbolized the release of the earth from the shackles of winter and the coming of spring with it’s promise of new hope, new life and prosperity. Nowadays Easter eggs are symbols of resurrection and a promise of eternal life. And the Ukrainian legends state that as long as pysanky are decorated, goodness will prevail over evil throughout the world.
In this workshop we will be using ancient practices and methods still practiced in Eastern Europe. These eggs are not meant to be eaten, they are given as gifts, exchanged with friends and used as decorations all year around. Exchange the pysanka with others as a token of love and friendship and beam with pride as you say “I made them”, for the egg carries considerable proof of the effort involved in designing it and therefore makes a cherished gift.
Best suited for adults.
My art studio is located in Port Washington NY. A few minutes walk from the LIRR.
We are using real dyes, beeswax and candlelight, dress appropriately as this can get messy.
Includes all materials and as many eggs as you can make.
*The dyes can stain clothing and hands.
*It's not easy to use gloves for this activity.
*The eggs are fragile and can crack when handled with pressure.
This is a meditative practice and involves a willingness to surrender to mistakes.
Enjoy the process.
