Learn and participate in the Slavic art form of egg decorating! Pysanky - the Ukrainian form of egg decorating - are an ancient art. Pysanky were made for a variety of occasions: winter solstice, spring equinox, first sowing, weddings, births, deaths, and later for Easter. Ukrainian Pysanky have been traditionally made year round, so we'll be celebrating the upcoming Easter holiday by crafting these delicate and ornate pieces. Students can expect to use dyes, special kistka instruments for writing, and beeswax to make their own creations. Every participant will make at least one pysanka to take home.
Pysanky can last for hundreds of years. They are made with real raw eggs which eventually dry out. Receiving a pysanka was considered a great honor. The designs all carried meaning. Each artist developed their own styles and designs.
A quiet, meditative art form, pysanky inspire hope, peace, fertility, and joy.
