Cultivating a Sociable Garden Neighborhood: Choosing native plants that belong in your ecoregion and grow well togetherVanessa Goold will talk about how to identify your ecoregion and research natural vegetative communities in your area to gain a deeper understanding of what kinds of plants will perform well on your site. From there, she will briefly discuss how to use plant reproductive strategies (aka "plant sociability") to figure out successful native plant combinations for your garden. Finally, she will say a few words about her services as an ecological garden coach and what this relatively new role has to offer native garden enthusiasts.
Vanessa Goold is an ecological garden coach and consultant with a passion for native plants. She has been gardening since she was a small child growing up in rural Vermont, but only discovered the value and importance of native plants as an adult, while reforesting and caring for an eight-acre property on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. She loves working with plants, talking about plants, and learning about the wonders of the natural world. Vanessa is excited to help others at whatever stage of the process they are in, whether that means just starting to add a few native plants to the mix, or reimagining a fully native ecological landscape. Vanessa has a Certificate in Ecological Gardening from Mt. Cuba Center in Hockessin, DE and a Master of Arts in Urban & Environmental Policy & Planning from Tufts University. She is a Master Urban Gardener, a certified Maryland Woodland Steward, and a Certified Fairfax Master Naturalist.
