“Making the simple complicated is commonplace. Making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that’s creativity.”
- Charles Mingus
Perfect is the enemy of done. Puppetry is the art of storytelling with objects and the objects can easily overwhelm an idea. This can lead to a show ballooning into overly complicated puppets, too many props, and possibly missing deadlines because you ended up in the weeds. In this workshop we will boil ideas down to their very core components. By putting restrictions on our creative process we will journey from conception to performance over the course of the 3 day workshop.
Schedule:
Friday: 7:00-9:30 PM
Saturday: 10:00 AM-6:00 PM
Sunday: 10:00 AM-3:00 PM
LEVEL: Intermediate (some puppetry experience suggested |18+
Materials: Cardboard, Hot Glue, Markers, Utility Knives
Presentation: Table top style with a single visible puppeteer. No spoken dialogue.
By having the puppeteer’s face visible we will experiment with directing focus between the 3 elements necessary for puppetry: the object, the puppeteer, and the audience.
We will draw inspiration from the work of Bernd Ogrodnik, Jordi Bertran, and Burr Tillstrom.
