Public talk by Alicia Sanders-Zakre, Head of Policy at the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).Alicia Sanders-Zakre will discuss the risks of nuclear deterrence in a context of escalating military tensions in Europe and beyond. Alicia's talk will be followed by a roundtable discussion with H.E. Mr Peter Mikl, Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to Estonia, H.E. Mr James Sherry, Ambassador of Ireland to Estonia, and H.E. Mr Altay Kulginov, Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Estonia. The roundtable discussion will be moderated by Dr Marianna Lovato, Lecturer of International Relations at Tallinn University. After the roundtable, the audience will have a chance to ask questions.
Alicia Sanders-Zakre is the Head of Policy at the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. She directs the campaign's research and policy development, including on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons. Previously, she was a researcher at the Arms Control Association and at the Brookings Institution. She has published over one hundred articles, editorials and reports on nuclear weapons, including in Arms Control Today, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, The International Review of the Red Cross, Global Policy and The Journal for Peace and Nuclear Disarmament. She has also provided expert analysis for the media, including Al Jazeera, the Associated Press, the BBC, and Reuters. Alicia holds a B.A. in International Security from Tufts University, a M.A.S in the International Law of Armed Conflict from the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights.
