About this Event

Not sure if bidding for public sector contracts is a fit for your VCSE organisation or Social Business? This free session can help you decide.

Public sector contracts can feel complex, time-consuming, and designed for large private providers — yet recent changes in procurement law and local authority powers mean this is a critical moment for VCSE organisations and social businesses in Manchester to re-examine whether contract delivery could (or should) be part of their future.

This practical introductory workshop is the first session in a two-part series, supporting organisations to make informed, realistic decisions about bidding for and delivering public sector contracts. It is not about encouraging everyone to bid — but about helping organisations understand the business case, risks, readiness, and alternative routes into public sector work.

Delivered by MSEA member Adrian Ashton, the session demystifies procurement using plain language, real examples, and interactive exercises that reflect how commissioners actually assess bids.

What this session will cover
  • Why public sector contracts matter, and whether they’re right for your organisation
  • Why now is a key moment to engage with procurement, including what’s changing under the Procurement Act 2023
  • Procurement in plain English: how commissioners think and how bids are scored
  • Getting ready to bid: key requirements, routes in, and relationship-building
  • Bidding smarter: deciding what to go for, pricing basics, and common pitfalls
  • An interactive exercise scoring example bids, plus a clear takeaway checklist
