Join UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) to discuss Public Policy from the 'South-Up' in an era of climate emergency
About this Event

The climate emergency highlights the need for new economic thinking. We have not arrived at this point of crisis by accident. It is a direct result of how we have designed our economies. Current economic policy is severely restricted by economic theory that minimises the role of the state in shaping markets and directing growth - theory that has come predominantly from the Global North. IIPP is launching a new initiative to counteract this trend.

IIPP’s new Strategic Economics Alliance (SEA), spearheaded by Professor Mariana Mazzucato, aims to strengthen new economic thinking and its influence on economic policy, notably in the area of climate action. This initiative will forge new connections between academics who are challenging mainstream economics and ambitious government and multilateral institution leaders, helping these leaders to better navigate the transition to inclusive and sustainable economies, and feeding back insights from their experience to inform economic theory. Importantly, it will provide a platform for amplifying the voices of women economists, in particular from the Global South, whose voices have been underrepresented.

The high-level panel will include Mariana Mazzucato, Founding Director at UCL IIPP, Kate Bingham, Former Chair of the UK Vaccine Taskforce, Patricia Hamzahee, co-Founder at Extend Ventures and the Black Funding Network, and Ngaire Woods, Founding Dean at Blavatnik School of Government and Professor of Global Economic Governance at Oxford University, among other key experts.

This event is part of the IIPP Forum 2024 'Rethinking the State' taking place on 12th and 13th June 2024. The Forum will explore new approaches to drive transformative public policy in the era of climate emergency. Find out more about the other sessions .
