This presentation explores the nature of Sanskrit - one of the world’s oldest languages, its relationship to other languages, and the rich literature it has carried through the centuries. It will also consider the significance of Sanskrit for key figures in the Theosophical Society, including Annie Besant and Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, and the texts and ideas that inspired their work.
Adam Bowles is an Associate Professor in the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry at the University of Queensland. He has worked on Sanskrit Literature for a number of decades and is currently involved in translating the thirteenth book of the Mahābhārata.
