After a brief presentation, engineers will be available at project stations (open house format), offering a welcoming environment for the public to review preliminary plans, ask questions, and provide comments and concerns. The proposed project consists of extending Onondaga County’s Canalways Trail system around Onondaga Lake, which is a non-motorized multi-use transportation trail system, from Onondaga Lake Park to an existing trailhead on Murphy’s Island, a total distance of approximately 2.3 miles.
The proposed project improvements will provide pedestrians, bicyclists, and other forms of active transportation with a separated/protected shared-use trail facility. The proposed trail is the final link in the regional trail network, a long standing community goal, to regionally connect towns and villages surrounding Onondaga Lake, and those communities beyond, including the City of Syracuse. Key project elements include the construction of an at-grade asphalt trail, several wetland boardwalks, a concrete pedestrian bridge spanning CSXT facilities, lighting improvements, and landscape/trail amenities. This project is scheduled for construction to commence in 2027.
