About this Event
Public History is an ambitious and evolving field, interdisciplinary by nature,
experimental in method, and deeply rooted in collaboration. But implementing
it in practice often means navigating uncertainty, managing complexity and
numerous challenges, and making difficult ethical decisions in real time.
This hands-on workshop invites MA and PhD students to engage with the real-
world complexities of Public History practice. Led by Dr Camilla Portesani,
visiting fellow at Queen’s University Belfast and consultant in public history,
participation, and accessibility, the session draws on her experience working
with museums and universities across Europe.
Through interactive exercises and scenario-based challenges, participants will
explore the ethical, interpersonal, and methodological tensions that arise when
theory meets practice. Together, we’ll reflect on our own positionality, test
strategies for navigating difficult situations, and sharpen the practical skills
needed to work confidently and ethically in the field.
Whether you're planning your first public history project or deep into your
research, this workshop offers a space to think critically, act creatively, and
build resilience and confidence in your practice and decision-making.
