In this informative and free public talk, Dr. Tatiana Mellema will discuss the important relationships that exist between art and public space. The discussion will also introduce the various processes by which public art finds its way into the public landscapes of our cities with specific reference to the role that municipalities play. Dr. Mellema will also consider the dominance of private development in public art programs today and the role that art plays in the increasing financialization and privatization of public space.
Dr. Tatiana Mellema is Curator of Outdoor Art at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery and holds a PhD in Art History from the University of British Columbia. Through her former position in Public Art at the City of Vancouver she realised major public art commissions such as "Weekend Chime" (2021) by Brady Cranfield, "A Constellation of Remediation" (2021) by T’uy’t’tanat-Cease Wyss and Anne Riley, and "Saltwater City Vancouver/鹹水埠温哥华" (2020) by Paul Wong. In addition to working in public art, Mellema is a sessional Lecturer at Emily Carr University of Art + Design and has previously worked in curatorial and educational programming at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Illingworth Kerr Gallery, The Banff Centre, The Power Plant, and the National Gallery of Canada.
This talk is presented as part of ArtsConnect’s Public Walks, Public Spaces, Public Arts, Public Cities program. The program includes a series series of related discussions on the role and nature of public art in the Tri-Cities lead by a diverse collection of people in all forms of art, architecture, urban planning focussing on questions from just what is it that makes a space public to what place does public art have in public conversations about the complex nature of a community’s public life?
