About this Event
With poet Reuben Gelley Newman!
Music and poetry have long been close siblings. From the work of medieval French troubadours to Language poets to the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, writers have imbued their verse with sonic play and musical inspiration. In this workshop, we'll take a look at how poets such as Willie Perdomo, Karynna McGlynn, Tyehimba Jess, and Jimin Seo use form and wordplay not only to write about music but to capture the spirit of sound in their words. Then, we'll write poems of our own using song as our guide.
About the Instructor: Reuben Gelley Newman (he/him) is the author of Feedback Harmonies (Seven Kitchens Press), a chapbook inspired by the musician Arthur Russell. He is a writer, musician, and librarian-in-training based in New York City, and he coedits for Couplet Poetry. His poems have appeared in Ninth Letter, Fairy Tale Review, Only Poems, and Salamander.
