Our tech futures aren’t just predicted — they’re designed. But who gets to decide?
About this Event

From smart fridges to cryogenic zoos, emerging technologies are already shaping how we live, eat, work, and belong — often without our consent.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll be introduced to tech futuring: how possible technological futures are imagined, built, and quietly embedded into everyday life. Using examples from our futuring database, you’ll explore speculative technologies, uncover the weak signals and hidden assumptions within them, and decide where you stand.

You’ll then design and make your own piece of protest memorabilia crafting a clear message for or against a chosen technological future. Drawing on art, design, and critical thinking, this workshop empowers you to respond creatively and politically to the futures being built around us.

This free event is open to the entire Capilano University community, including those who do not work or study on campus but wish to engage with these issues. Registration is required.

Light snacks will be served. Masks will be provided and are encouraged while not eating.

The event will formally end at 12:50 to allow students and faculty attending 1:00 classes time to move to their next classroom, but we will be in the space for an additional hour and invite anyone who can stay past 12:50 to continue working on their projects.

Access Notes

The workshop will take place in LB119, which is in the Library building. The room is close to two street-level entrances and requires no stairs to access, but the sidewalks from the parking lots are at an incline. The West entrance (off Greg Lee Way) is very close to the bus loop on Purcell Way, and the path between the bus stop and the library entrance is flat.

Entrances to the Library building have switch- and handwave-operated automatic doors. If you encounter any issues entering the building on the day of the event, please call the Library Services Desk at 604-984-4944 for assistance.

Please contact [email protected] to ask any questions or to share your access needs for the event.
